We just completed our second 1/2 marathon this morning. Compared to our first it was a breeze. Although the route was a lot tougher (climb in and out of the River Valley 3 times each) at least this time we didn’t have to contend with blizzard conditions. We finished almost 45 minutes faster than we did the Hypothermic half. I’ve got numb butt and stiff legs but other than that “I feel good”. I’ve signed up to do a full marathon in August. I can’t imagine doing today’s race twice to equal a full marathon. At least it is a goal to shoot for……even if I don’t make it the full 42 kilometres.
Birthday Girls
Once again this year Tango and Hope co-hosted their annual birthday party. Susan baked special dog friendly cups cakes smothered in “icing”. Both Tango and Hope had their eyes focused on the same cup cake but when they got the go ahead to start eating, they quickly figure out which one was theirs.
As you can see by Tilly’s chin and her ear (in the picture below)…….everyone thoroughly enjoyed their treat.

Mother Nature’s Cruel Joke
Would you believe that less than 10 hours ago our yard was virtually snow free……look at it now. Mother Nature definitely has a sense of humour. It is just so beautiful but the heavy, wet snow is causing havoc in Edmonton. Trees are falling down and taking out power lines all over the city. I’m glad I have today off so that I could go around the yard and shake/shovel the snow off all my shrubs and trees to prevent them from getting damaged. The dogs are loving it!!
Puppy Play Day
It was a beautiful, mild day on Sunday so we knew that we had to grab the puppies and spend some family time outside. First Don, Tango, Wally and I went for a brisk 12km walk. Then we packed everyone into the van and headed out to Stony Plain. Wally and Tango did a little SAR training and then we all went for a nice off leash walk. Everyone was wet, muddy and very happy when we were done.
Half Marathon…..check!!!

Yesterday Don and I completed the Edmonton Hypothermic Half Marathon walk and boy did the race ever live up to it’s name. We have had the most amazing winter. Other than a couple of cold snaps, we have had very little snow and unbelievably mild temps…..that was until this weekend. We had a near record snow fall and the temps dropped to minus 17 celsius race morning. I had on so many layers of clothes that I felt like I did when I was a kid and my mother dressed me up in a big, bulky snowsuit before she would let me go out and play in the winter.
We have’t done any training in deep snow so we were not prepared for how much more effort it required to walk through deep powdered snow. By the 10K mark I was exhausted and wished I could quit. I’m still not sure how I managed to complete the full 21.1 kilometres. My training times had me finishing in under 3hrs and 30 minutes but I ended up taking 3hrs and 44 minutes. I trained with a group of people who have done many half, full and ultra’s and they all said that it was a very tough race so I guess I can take some solace in that.
I can now cross this one off my bucket list!

It’s a tie
Yesterday I posted this picture on facebook and identified my gorgeous boy as my favourite Valentine. Today I am forced to recant this statement and set the record straight. I actually have two favourite Valentines…..Wally and Don.
Last month I had strongly hinted that this Valentine’s Day I wanted to feel special…..you know…..I wanted to be romanced…like in the “olden days” when we were in lust. I have to take my hat off to the skinny guy. He took on the challenge and boy was I surprised. I have to admit I was a little worried when 5pm came and went and I didn’t even have a card yet….but then it started. First he produced a beautiful, long stemmed red rose. That was quickly followed by a beautiful pendant and necklace. Then I was told that I had to hurry up and get ready because a limo was picking us up in 30 minutes. We enjoyed a wonderful 4 course dinner and wine. I feel truly spoiled and loved. Move over Wally there is a new (renewed) love in my life with two legs instead of four!!

Amazing Drawings
I found a talented local artist who did these spectacular drawings of our “kids”. I just gave her pictures of the dogs and I got these wonderful keepsakes. I know that when they have all gone to puppy heaven, I will have these amazing drawings to ease my heartache. She is particularly talented at capturing the eyes…they show the heart, soul and personality of our dogs. People who have seen the drawings and know our dogs comment on how she has managed to convey much more than just an image. I love them all but I especially love the one of Wally with his big, jowly puddles. If you would like to commission a drawing of your beloved companion animal, get in touch with me and I will give you her contact info.
I surprised Don and got this extra drawing of Tango in her search vest that he can hang in his office at work.

2011 Block of the Month
I finally finished all 12 of of my quilt blocks for 2011 (these are Sep – Dec). In February, we will all get together to talk about different ideas on how to use these 12 blocks in quilt. I haven’t decided whether to make it a queen or kings size or who I am going to give it to when it is finished. There has been one person who really seemed to like the colour combination. Hey “Susu & Lulu” what size is your bed????

2011 in review
The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.
Here’s an excerpt:
A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 4,200 times in 2011. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 4 trips to carry that many people.

Cold start
This morning Don and I joined a thousand or so other crazy people to walk 5 kms in the Brita Resolution race. It was a balmy -14C in Edmonton and I had on so many layers that I felt like the Michelin man. Despite the cold temps and the very ice-y trail, we finished in a respectable 46 minutes.
We thought this would be a great way to start 2012 and a “warm up” for our half marathon in February.
Perfect Xmas Eve
Hope, Wally, Bentley, Tango, Trixie and little Tilly
The Alberta weather gods have smiled upon us this December. Today it is +5 and sunny with just a hint of snow on the ground…..compared to last year’s arctic freeze with record snowfall. The gang spent the day at Patty’s with all our dogs in tow. We had a wonderful walk around her acreage and then it was back to the house for a delicious lunch prepared by Susan. What a perfect way to spend Xmas eve…..much better than fighting our way through crowds at the mall. It always amazes me that we can have so many dogs together in the house (some even intact) and they all get along.
Tonight we are going to a Christmas concert at Susan’s church. Hope is going to be a part of the Christmas story along with some farm animals. I’m sure she is going to be the ‘star’!

Final Donation
Wally has made his final blood donation to the Canadian Animal Blood Bank. He will be 11 years old in a few months so he will no longer qualify as a donor. I think he is going to miss having all the young Vet Tech students smooching him up and telling him how beautiful he is and all the treats he gets at the end of the procedure. I wonder how many puppy lives he has saved in his 10 years of donating?

Yeah….Team Tango!!!
I am thrilled to announce that Team Tango passed their annual RCMP cadaver certification this morning. As a reward, Tango got a Mega-P’nut treat from Bone and Biscuit in Sherwood Park and Don is going to get a nice ‘take-out’ dinner from the restaurant of his choice. I think Tango got the better end of this deal.

Snuggling with Grandma
This week we had Don’s Mom over for dinner to celebrate her 96th birthday. As you can see from the pictures, each dog took their opportunity to snuggle with Grandma and wish her a very Happy Birthday!

More Blocks of the Month
Is has been a few months since I have posted my quilt blocks for the Quiltessenial Company 2011 Block of the Month Club. Here are May through August. We are two thirds of the way through the year and only 4 more blocks need to be completed before I can start thinking about how I am going to assemble them into a finished quilt.

Happy Birthday Ebony
Today is Ebony’s 4th birthday. She and her partner Sam have formed an amazing working team. It was wonderful to hear how much she assists him at work and in his day to day life. It was always so hard to say goodbye to a foster puppy but it was especially hard to say goodbye to Ebony. We had an incredible bond. She was so easy to train and she loved to work and please me.
I always worried about my foster puppies’ future. You hope they are going to be teamed up with someone who will love them and much as you do. Well I certainly don’t have to worry about Ebony’s life. She lives in the most beautiful home (my dream home), on a large acreage with a lake to swim in. She’s got a puppy housemate named Bear that she can play with when she is not working. Sam and his family obviously love her very much and my heart is at peace when I see them together.
Here’s a picture of my handsome boy Wally (Ebony’s Dad) with Sam and Ebony. Look at that amazing view in the background. You will notice that Wally managed to find the one pile of donkey poop on the property. My boy has never met a pile of poop that he didn’t want to roll in. Stinky or not, I still love him.

Remembering Cash
It is with a very heavy heart that I announce that Tango’s brother Cash went to puppy heaven. They discovered that his body was full of cancer so they made the very difficult decision to say goodbye. Our hearts go out to you.

Attention litter-bugs: puppycam ready to switch on
I have loved this breed for years. I can hardly wait to see the new puppies and watch them grow. I am hoping to add a Berner to our family in the future.

Pets in the Park
On Sunday we volunteered to set up a booth at the Humane Society’s annual Pets in the Park. Tango was a little excited when we first got there. Both she and Don were wearing their “search gear” so she thought that she was there to work. Once she figured out that there wasn’t going to be any searching, she settled down and helped greet all the visitors and their pets.

Yeah Team Tango!!!
Don and Tango passed their annual RCMP certification test today. Although it has been raining non-stop all day they went ahead with the testing. The large articles have been laying out in the test field for two rain filled days, but Tango found them all. The people search was picture perfect and a thing of beauty. She hit on the scent more than 75 yards away. They were tested on 4 profiles today: large articles, small articles, people and alleys. Their cadaver test will happen this fall. I wasn’t allowed to watch the certifcation tests because I am too much of a distraction for our girl. While she is searching she likes to do a ‘run-by’ just to say hi to Mom.
I’m so proud of them. We are going to have a celebration dinner tonight!!!

They’ve hatched
Our latest batch of robins have hatched. I’ve been away this week so I am not sure what day they were born but they look pretty big already. I think I can see 3 beaks in the first picture. Mom and Dad are busy running back and forth with food for their hatchlings. I’ll have to get Don to crawl up the ladder and see if he can get a better picture without disturbing the family.

True search girl
I got Don a book on search and rescue training for his birthday. He had been reading it and when he took a break, he put it down on the couch beside him. Next thing we know, our search girl has crawled up beside him and put her paw on the the cover of the book. It was such a perfect photo opportunity that you would almost think that we posed it…..but we didn’t.
Big Puppy!!!
We spent another wonderful day at Patty’s acreage with all the dogs. It was great to walk the property without trudging through thigh deep snow…..but…..the damn mosquitos were crazy. I’ve never seen so many in my life. We had to bathe our entire bodies in deep woods off to keep from getting eaten alive. There were so many that you could hear a loud hum. The City is saying that we are experiencing the worst mosquito infestation ever in recorded history. The annoying part is that this variety is out in full force during the hottest part of the day. Poor Hope got so many bites on her pretty, black face that she was all swollen and itchy. She must have an allergy to them.
Even with all the skeeters we had a wonderful time. Tilly got to meet a horse up close and personal…..I think the horse enjoyed it more than she did.
Wally managed to roll in everything stinky and disgusting that he could find. His beautiful golden coat took on a greenish patina from all the poop he ground into it. We left the big dogs outside in the dog run so that they could dry off. Tango managed to squish her fat head through the gate and got herself stuck. Thank goodness my “mommy” instincts kicked in and I decided that I needed to check on the kids so we were able to free her before any damage was done. It took two baths to get the green tinge and disgusting smell out of Wally’s coat.

Provincial Mock Search
Team Tango are in southern Alberta participating in a provincial mock search. Both ground pounders (people) and dog search groups work together on different wilderness profiles to practice their skills and working with one another. The scenario for Saturday’s morning was to search was for a missing 30 year old woman with her 19 month old baby. All of the various search teams headed off looking for the pair. Team Tango left the base camp around 11am. First Tango found an abandoned campsite with some clothing followed by a pen sitting on a mound of snow. Around noon Tango starting indicating that she detected another human scent and headed off in pursuit with Don following closely behind her. We are proud to say that Team Tango found the missing pair. As is her custom, she has to give everyone a very enthusiastic face wash….and she was particularly interested in the baby in the back pack. She keep going up on her hind legs to get a sniff. Needless to say Don was thrilled with her performance and she was rewarded with playtime with her favourite ball.

River valley search continues
Team Tango continued their search in the River Valley on Tuesday. It seems like every picture and video that has been taken of the search features Don’s rear end. People are starting to tease him that that is his best profile.
We hope that the search will provide some closure for the many families affected by the large number of missing women in the Edmonton area.
Here is a new link to an Edmonton Sun article. Again….I don’t know how long these link will be active.

Team Tango Searches River Valley
Today Don and Tango took part in a search at the request of the RCMP and Project Kare. All the local print and tv news groups were there. Although there were 3 teams from the Canadian Search Dog Association it looks like most of the coverage features Don and Tango….probably because my girl is so beautiful and photogenic.
Here are the links to the various media sources:
Edmonton Journal
CBC
Edmonton Sun
Global Edmonton
CTV
Here’s a picture of Don and Tango from Global News Edmonton:

I don’t know how long these links will work but hopefully they will be valid for a few days.

Before and After Look
I have to start out this post by apologizing to Tilly’s breeder. Sorry Chris! I couldn’t help it. Our Tilly is not a prim and proper British girl. She’s a gardener. She loves hanging out in the backyard, digging in the mud and coming back in the house with leaves, twigs and mud intertwined in her beautiful, ruby fur coat. I swore I was never going to trim her but I’ve had to reconsider. First I tried just trimming her feet to get rid of her hairy, polar bear toes…..but it just wasn’t enough. To top it off, she has managed to get huge matts in her ears and belly from gardening.
To make the process less traumatic, I hired a mobile groomer to come to our house so that I could be part of the process and make sure Tilly wasn’t too stressed out. I was picturing a mobile grooming van pulling up on our driveway….but I got a Goth, heavily chained and pierced groomer who showed up an hour late with just her clippers, scissors and Hartz pet shampoo from Dollarama. I was so tempted to just say thanks but no thanks but I knew I wouldn’t be able to get an appointment with another groomer for several weeks and I just couldn’t take the mess any more. She did an ok job but I insisted that she use our high quality shampoo and creme rinse. Not only did I pay about the same I would have paid at a groomer’s shop but I was left with all the mess to clean up.
All things considered, I guess I am grateful that the first grooming was done in the comfort of our home but next time she is going to the puppy beauty salon….no more Goth groomer for us.

Golf anyone?
Tilly just loves this golf ball. She will chase it around the house and then run up stairs and watch it bounce down the stairs. My only concerns is that Wally or Tango could get a hold of it and choke on it (like Oprah’s beautiful golden did when she played with the Cocker spaniel’s small ball). Tilly only gets to play with it when I can supervise everyone.

March and April BOM
Finally got around to posting my Block of the Month quilt blocks for March and April. We are a 1/3 of the way through…..4 blocks down 8 more to go. I am proud to say that I finished March’s block the weekend I got my kit and I did April’s block the day I got it. Now that is efficiency. I would like to say that I am always like that but I would be a big, fat liar. I don’t know if it is aging or 20 plus years living with the King of procrastination…but I’ve become quite good at putting things off and never getting around to them.

Happy Birthday Wally
I can’t believe my boy is 10 years old today. Yikes……I just can’t even bare to think of a day that I will come home and not find that beautiful, big golden boy face waiting for me at the door. I keep telling my Vet that the day I have to put Wally down he might as well have a second injection ready to put me out of my misery. I know, for you non-dog lovers, you think I am nuts. I have such a strong connection to this boy and he brings such joy to my life that the thought of him aging and one day going to puppy heaven is almost unbearable. Ok…enough sadness, let’s celebrate his wonderful life.
Wally’s favourite treat in the whole world is Tim Bits. So this morning he got 1/2 a Tim Bit for every year. You can see the drool pouring out of his big, jowly muzzle and the leftover yogurt on top of his nose (from cleaning out my breakfast bowl).
