Erin’s Tropical Punch Quilt

Erin bought a condo this year and has been working on decorating it.  I haven’t seen it yet but I hear that her living room has blue and orange accents.  I saw this quilt kit in a local quilt store and it had her colours and an interesting pattern.  I’m not a big fan of quilt kits but it was so perfect that I bought it and then purchased some additional fabrics to make it large enough for a good sized lap quilt.

It took a while to cut 280 HSTs and 140 5×5 squares. Here are the first 4 finished blocks….only 136 more to go.

And here is the finished quilt top.  Shortly after completing the top I got a longarm quilting machine so I had a hard time deciding how to quilt it.  The fabrics were so busy and contrasting that I could have just done an over-all edge to edge design but I wanted to play with my new toy and trying something more interesting.

I decided to use a beautiful wool batting to give the quilt a nice loft.  I chose to just quilt the orange/yellow centres and stitch in the ditch around the blue fabrics.  It pushed the orange centres into the background and allowed the blue/green fabrics to really show off the loft of the wool.  Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures of the finished quilt and backing.  Hopefully Erin will take a few pictures and send them back to me.
