WIP and first FAL

I’ve finally finished Leftovers III which gives me my first FAL for the 4th quarter (FAL wish list).  It has lots of feathers and detailed quilting in the white background.  Unfortunately it was a dull day when I took these pictures so you can’t see the detail and loft created by the quilting.

Leftovers3

Left3-1

Leftovers3-2

Leftovers3-5

It is my own design and it was made with leftover strips of fabric (#scraptastictuesday) from my Blue Odyssey quilt.  Click here to see more pictures of Leftovers III and to read about the making of this quilt.

I have finished the FMQ on the girl’s version of High Tea and I’m pretty happy with it.    Once I finish sewing on the binding I will post more pictures.

HighTeaFrame

Leftovers IV is now on the frame.  I haven’t figured out what I am going to FMQ on it but I am leaning towards either using just white thread in the background or going a little crazy and using multiple colours.

Lucky Me…..I won!!

I can’t believe it. I just got an email from Sew Sisters Quilt shop telling me that I won their day 6 give-a-way from Blogathon Canada. I’m so excited. I won a fat quarter bundle of Stonehenge Oh Canada fabric. In my comment I said that the bundle would make a lovely Quilts of Valour quilt. Well I am going to follow through on that and donate the finished quilt to QofV.  Thanks to Sew Sisters for hosting this wonderful event and for all the quilters around the globe that participated.  I found some wonderful new blogs to follow.

I would like to welcome everyone who came here from Sew Sisters’s Blogathon Canada.   It is great that we can connect with other Canadian bloggers who love to quilt.  In 2009 my friend encouraged me to take an introduction to quilting class with her.  I was immediately hooked addicted.  At the end of the 6 or 8 week class we had a small sampler quilt top finished but in reality I had actually made two kingsize quilt tops on my own during the same time period.  I know….woman obsessed.   Until the fall of 2013 I was mostly a quilt top maker.  Then I bought my longarm.  Now I actually have completed quilts that I make for friends, family, charity and/or commissions and I have a part time longarm business.  For the most part I prefer to make up my own quilt designs but sometimes I will use a pattern.

Here are just a few of my quilts.  If you want to learn more about each quilt just click on the link in the caption below each picture.

WIP Wednesday

Life is slowing getting back to a ‘new’ normal around here and I’ve started to feel like I am getting some of my creative mojo back.    I’ve finished quilting Leftovers III and have the binding partly hand sewn on.

I’ve finished piecing Leftovers IV and it is now waiting for FMQ.  I forgot to take a picture of the finished top but here is one I took once I had all the finished blocks laid out on my design wall.

SneakPeak2

I’ve got the pink and orange version of High Tea on my frame now and I’ve got it about 60% quilted.  I went a little crazy with the FMQ.  I can’t believe the number of hours I have put into it already.  It has been my therapy and kept my mind occupied since losing our beloved Tango.  Here is a sneak peak of the first layer of FMQ I did in the plain blocks.  I added 3 more layers of quilting after this…..I know crazy!?!?!?!

Goodbye Tango

2004FEB12 - 2014NOV01

2004FEB12 – 2014NOV01

Tango put up a brave fight against degenerative myelopathy for almost 2 years.  Last week everything changed. Wednesday morning she woke up with almost complete paralysis from mid back down,  partial paralysis in her front legs and unable to lift her head without crying out in pain.   We took her to the Chiropractor that morning and she said that her neck was a mess.  It gave us some hope that maybe this was only temporary.  We soon realized that this wasn’t temporary and it wasn’t going to get any better.  Although our hearts were shattered we knew what we needed to do out of love and respect for our girl.  We said goodbye to her Saturday morning.  Before we left for the Vet I lied on the floor with her.  She looked at me with those big brown eyes and licked the tears off my face.

12 weeks

12 weeks old – will you ever grow into those ears???

My what big ears you have!

My what big ears you have!

DadGirl

Daddy’s #1 girl (sorry Erin)

Grandma's girl

Grandma’s girl

Goodbye my beautiful girl.  I’m sure that Tasha and Ming were there to greet you and Grandma’s lap and warm hand are there to stroke and comfort you.  You are now free to run like the wind again with your favourite orange ball in your mouth.  Until we meet again…….

We got a thoughtful email from a friend with the perfect poem:

“If it should be”

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,

and the pain should keep me from my sleep

Then you must do what must be done

For this, the battle, cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand

Do not let the grief then stay in your hand,

For this day more than all the rest

Your love and friendship stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,

What is to come can hold no fears.

You would not want me to suffer so;

When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they’ll tend

And stay with me, if you can, to the end.

Hold me firm and speak to me

Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time, you will see,

It is a kindness you do for me.

Although my tail its last was waved

From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Do not grieve that it should be you,

Who must decide this thing to do,

We have been so close, we two, these years;

Do not let your heart hold any tears.

Smile, for we walked together for a little while. ”

High Tea Quilt Pattern Revealed

Adrianne from On the Windy side has released her new quilt pattern High Tea so now I can show you the quilts I made to test her pattern.  It is a very quick and easy to make pattern that is pre-cut friendly (charms squares, layers cakes and  jelly rolls) but also easy to make using yardage.  I made a ‘boy’ version using green and gold sashing in support of our Edmonton Eskimos.  I used charm squares and a few layer cakes for the 4-patches and yardage for the sashing.   I followed her pattern exactly on this one:

image1

For the girl’s version I used yardage rather than pre-cuts.   I left every other centre block plain so that I could do some free motion quilting and I changed the sashing around the centre blocks so that the neutral sashing acts as a frame for the bright/busy 4-patch and the coloured sashing forms a frame around the FMQ.

image2

When these quilts are finished, I am going to donate them to the Little Warriors Be Brave Ranch.  Each child is given a quilt when they arrive at camp and when they leave they get to take it home with them.

Adrianne’s pattern is officially available for purchase starting today and for 48 hours it will be half off at her Etsy shop and on Craftsy.  You can see mine and all the other pattern testers’ quilt tops on Adrianne’s website.

Wordless Wednesday – Ombre Golden

WallyTshirt

We spent a beautiful fall day at Patty’s farm/acreage.  The dogs always have a wonderful time running free in her fields and eating as many cow pies as they can find.  Wally does enjoy eating a few of them but his first love is rolling in them.  My boy has never met a pile of poop that he didn’t want to roll in.   We dressed him in a long sleeved t-shirt to try and keep the poop out of his beautiful golden locks.   Unfortunately we had to take it off when it got too loose around his belly and he peed all over it.  Then the dogs found the dug out and went in for a quick swim and drink.  The other 5 dogs got out fairly clean but our Wally got stuck in mud half way up his body and had to be pulled out by Patty.    Talk about a mud bath…..now he has to have a ‘real’ bath…but he was pretty happy with himself.  I’m still amazed at how active and agile he is for a old man of 13 years…..14 in April.

FAL Quarter 4 Wish List

It is that time again to make a commitment to the final quarter of the 2014 finish-a-long hosted by Katy at the Littlest Thistle.  I have one left over from last quarter that didn’t get finished and I am adding four more to my list for a total of five.

Leftovers III is on my frame and about 3/4 quilted so I just have to finish it off and bind it.

L3Frame

Leftovers IV is going to be a HST string quilt.  I’ve got about 80% of the blocks made so I have to finish the last few, find the perfect layout, sew them together, quilt and then bind.

Leftover4start

Yesterday I volunteered to be a pattern tester for Adrianne at On the Windy Side.  I’ve got roughly 15 days to have a finished queen size quilt top.  Although it is a tight timeline….I’m looking forward to the new experience.   I am not allowed to share the pattern with you just yet because it is top secret until it is published and for sale at the end of the month.  I’m primarily using Zen Chic’s Barcelona fabric along with some Grunge fabric from Basic Grey.  When the quilt is completed I am going to donate it to http://littlewarriors.ca/events/quilts-for-the-be-brave-ranch/.   Each child is given a quilt when they arrive at camp and when they leave they get to take it home with them.

HighTeaBFabric

At the 2nd quarter FAL wrap up party I was lucky enough to win a $25 gift card from Becca at  Sew me a Song.  I used it to help purchase this 1/2 yard fabric bundle.   I think these fabrics, plus a few more from my stash, will make a cute quilt for  a little girl.  I am using the same pattern as above and it will be donated to the Be Brave Ranch too.

HighTeaGFabric

HighTeaGfab

And my final project is a commission.  A queen size quilt for my massage therapist.  She gave me this pillow sham to use as my inspiration and left the rest up to me.  No pressure there.  I can’t say much more or show the fabrics that I’m using because she looks at my blog and I want this to be a complete surprise….hopefully a good one?!?!?!

PatInspiration

Yikes….this is a big list.

Shoji Screen FAL#3

I can’t believe that this quilt is finally done.  I made it back in 2009 or 2010.    It hung around my studio for years because I had no idea how I wanted to quilt it and I was afraid to tackle it on my domestic machine.  It was on my 2nd and 3rd quarter FAL lists.  I even had it on my frame 3 different times before I finally finished all the free motion quilting.  I used two layers of batting: a stiff fusible one (so that it will hang flat and firm) and a high loft polyester.  It gave amazing depth to the peacocks and the flowers.  I put a sleeve on it so that it can be used as both a wall hanging or a lap quilt.  I took pictures today in the shade and in full sun.  Although the full sun pictures fade out the colours, they definitely show off the dimension created by the quilting and the double batting.

ShojiFinish

Shoji100
Shoji101
Shoji102
Shoji105

I just love how the quilting shows up on the back of the quilt….such dimension.

Shoji104

And of course there has to be a picture of little Tilly parked in the middle of my quilt as I hand sew the binding on.  I love the bad-hair-day-mohawk-head.  I looks like  she was giving Don the evil eye because she was sick of the flash going off in her face repeatedly.

WIP and FAL #2

#Urban Windows is my second FAL finish of the 3rd quarter (link to 3rd quarter FAL wish list).   It was a little time consuming to FMQ but I love all the dimension and texture that the quilting added.   I custom quilted each “window” with a different design and then I used a funky triple wave in the sashing.

To read more about this quilt and see more pictures pick click here.

Leftovers III in on my frame and I’ve completed about half of the free motion quilting.  Lots of ruler work but I am liking how it is turning out.  It won’t be a 3rd quarter FAL finish.  I guess it will have to go on my next FAL list.

L3Frame

I’ve got almost all of the HST’s for Leftovers IV completed.  I just need to lay them out on my design wall and start sewing them together.

3rd Quarter FAL Finish

OneBwon

Well the 3rd quarter is almost over and I finally have my first FAL finish (here is a link back to my FAL wish list).  It is a one-block-wonder that I started back in 2010.  When I initially finished piecing it, it was too small for a queen and I didn’t like the fabric I had for the border so I just added it to my pile of UFOs and forgot about it.  I pulled it out in January and added it to my 1st quarter FAL list  It got carried forward to the 2nd and 3rd quarters before I managed to complete it.

I removed some of the blocks in the upper right hand quadrant of the quilt top and replaced them with the blue background fabric.  I used appliqué and trapunto to show off the two beautiful geishas that were the stars of the OBW fabric.

OBWGeisha

I really like how the geisha faces made interesting blocks.

OBW1

This is what the original fabric looked like.  It was made up of two geishas, rose and purple irises and a water like background.

Batik Beauty

Batik Beauty 109″ x 109″

I recently donated this king size Batik quilt to be used at a silent auction fundraiser for The Bockman Foundation. It is a non-profit charity that helps people with spinal cord injuries.   I got a thank you email informing me that the quilt sold for $600. I then found out that the people who bought the quilt re-donated it to another silent auction fundraiser for a family with 3 young children that tragically lost their father.   I hope that my quilt brings at least another $600 for that unfortunate family.

WIP

It has been a while since I’ve posted any updates.  I’ve finally finished the FMQ on Shoji Screen.  It has been on my FAL list every quarter this year so hopefully I will get the binding on and have it as a 3rd quarter finish.

ShojiPeacock

Urban Windows is a finished quilt top.  I have a week of vacation starting on September 1st so I hope to get it on the frame then.  I am so glad that I finally decided to play with my quick curve ruler.  Coincidentally, Sew Kind of Wonderful has a new QAL starting  the first week of September using the QCR and their Curve It Up pattern.  I’m looking forward to participating.

I took a picture of the quilt top before and after the sashing and borders were added.  It wasn’t until I was editing the pictures on my laptop that I realized I had missed putting the top and bottom borders on….so it was back to the sewing machine.  I forgot to take another pictures after the missing borders were added.

QAL CIU

Instead of finishing one of my WIP,  I foolishly decided to start a new quilt.  I’m my own worst enemy.  It is Leftovers IV using fabric leftover from my Blue Odyssey quilt.  It’s my first time trying a string block.  They sure go together quickly.

Pets on Quilts Blog Hop

Today I am joining the 2014 Pets on Quilts blog hop. Tilly loves to “help” by sitting in the middle of any and every quilt that I try to hand sew the binding on. She is so darn cute and flirty when she does it that I don’t have the heart to kick her off. Here are just a few of the many quilts her hairy, little body has graced.

I am so surprised at how fast Urban Windows is going together.  I guess it makes sense when you are piecing large 3 x 8 blocks instead of .75 x .75 pieces like I have in my Leftovers III.  I ended up with a very pretty pile of trimmings from my 56 quick curve blocks.

UrbanWtrimmings

I’ve got most of the blocks completed and then all I have to do is add the sashing.

I have finished piecing Leftovers III so it is now waiting for some free motion quilting inspiration before I put it on the frame.

Left3-top

I’ve managed to cut and sew the binding on my one block wonder.  I’m waiting for a cooler day to hand sew the binding on the back and then I will have my first FAL of the 3rd quarter.

I’ve started working on my Urban Windows quilt.  I’ve done all the cutting and I have my first few blocks pieced together.  I’m mad at myself for procrastinating for a over a year before starting this one.  I thought it was going to be a pain to cut and piece but they actually went together very quickly.  The blocks are very forgiving because you trim each one so you end up with perfect 3 x 8 blocks.

The ‘kids’ love licking the empty yogurt containers. I used to buy 500ml containers so they got to ‘clean’ one every 3 days. When I switched to the 1 litre containers they had to wait a whole week. They still join me in the kitchen every morning hoping that today is the day that the container is ready for their pre-wash cycle.

It’s the 20th of July and I can finally say that summer has arrived.  We had a week of hot temperatures and then rain and drizzle for several days.  I had a real shock when I stepped out into the garden this morning and saw how much everything has grown and matured.  It’s amazing what a little bit of mother natures moisture does for the garden.  Our sour cherry tree is just loaded with fruit.  I don’t mind sharing with the birds but it ticks me off when they just take a bite out of one and then move on to another, and another.

Cherry

Last year I bought a small Meyer Lemon bush.  It had tons of blooms and even produced a dozen or so small lemons .  I brought it into the house in September and kept it in a south facing window all winter.   I was thrilled to see that the little fruit continued to grow slowly over the winter.  I moved it back outside in mid June and now the fruit are big, beautiful and starting to turn yellow.   It is producing new leaves and it looks like it may have a few flowers soon.  Hopefully it will have enough time to set some fruit again.

It seems like all the summer flowering perennials have burst into bloom and the annuals are really showing off to try and compete.

Dusty Farrell and WIP

I had the pleasure of taking 8 longarm classes with Dusty Farrell.  He is a very talented, down-to-earth guy who is well known for his glow-in-the-dark quilts.  He generously allowed us to take some pictures of his quilts and samples.  Aren’t they wonderful?  The butterflies on the white quilt were all created freehand with thread painting on his longarm.  I really enjoyed that class.

I did manage to get a little more work done on Leftovers III.
