This week’s instructions were so much quicker to complete. The quilt is now changing from square to more rectangular. I should have worked more slowly because now I have to help sand and paint the deck until the next clue is released on Monday. 😉😂😫

I apologize for the rash of recent posts. I couldn’t publish my finishes as they were completed because I wanted them to be a surprise for Erin and Paul. Unfortunately I have to have them all public before the July 7th close of the 2nd quarter of the 2016 finish-a-long. My final finish of the 2nd quarter (here is a link to my original list ) is a v-shaped window treatment for the nursery. I love how it turned out. It helps to tie everything together. One side has prairie points like the pillow and it incorporates all the colours from the quilt, bedskirt and pillow. The other side is a more simple verticle green aqua and white stripe.

I have my third finish of the 2nd quarter (here is a link to my original list ). It’s a quilt for our first grandchild. I was having trouble trying to decide on a design for the quilt so I decided to go with my two favourites and make it a two sided quilt. Are you noticing a theme here. All of the items that I made for our grand baby are two sided. I wanted to give the parents as many options as possible for their nursery. I was asked to make everything gender neutral using any combination of green aqua, navy, yellow and grey.
I saw this quilt idea on Pinterest and thought it would be perfect for a baby quilt. Neither too masculine or feminine. I changed the design a little bit. Instead of each row alternating the twist I made them all start and twist in unison. I like it better this way….softer and less distracting. I made 104 of these little blocks and then trimmed them all. Despite hating all the time it takes to trim the blocks, I do get some satisfaction from looking at the big pile of perfectly sized blocks and the colourful pile of cuttings.
I placed all the blocks on my design wall to help me decide what order to place the colours.
Then came the second quilt top for the back. I made 108 half square triangles using numerous prints and solids in each colour group. Once again I used my trusty design wall to lay out the HSTs and came up with this design. I then added white strips to make the top 5″ bigger on all four sides so I could mount it on my longarm.
I wasn’t able to do any intricate free motion quilting because it would look good on the one side but the design would not match up with the quilt layout on the other side. I went with an all over design called Arrowhead.
I used two layers of batting, Hobbes 80/20 and a high loft polyester. It really gives some life to the free motion quilting.
I really wanted to put a label on the quilt for our grand baby. Unfortunately, because it was two sided, there was nowhere to put it where it wouldn’t stand out and take away from the quilt. I found this great post online where a quilter showed how she stitched words into her bindings to replace the traditional label. It was perfect. I used off white thread so that it would just disappear into the binding but you could still find it if you were looking for it. It says “Made with love 2016 Grandma Debbie”

I have my second finish of the 2nd quarter (here is a link to my original list ). It is a 20 x 20 pillow I made for our grand baby’s nursery. They didn’t want to know the sex of the baby so they went with a gender neutral colour scheme of green aqua walls with accents in navy, yellow and grey. The first side of the pillow has an appliquéd dolphin on it. Erin loves dolphins.
The other side has a cute appliquéd giraffe and bird. I also added some prairie points to give it more interest.

This is my first finish for the 2nd quarter (here is a link to my original list ). Erin knew that I was going to make a quilt for the crib so she asked me if I would also make a co-ordinating adjustable bed skirt. I had no idea that crib skirts were adjustable let alone how to make one. After much online research I figured out that there are a couple of ways to do it depending on how the base of the crib is made. In our case there is grid work so the best option is to have ties on each skirt piece so that the skirt can be raised as the crib is lowered.
The first side is this lovely navy blue fabric with a small white print alternating with white. I think it could easily be masculine or feminine.
The other side is a solid green aqua (the nursery wall colour) with a small white print.

It’s time to list all the items that I plan to finish in the next 3 months. This is an easy one. We are going to be grandparents in a few months so this quarter is dedicated to baby stuff. We don’t know the sex of the baby and they want a gender neutral nursery. We’ve been given this colour swatch…..green aqua.
The nursery will be painted this colour, the furniture will be all white and they want navy, grey and yellow accents.
I am making a crib quilt, and adjustable crib skirt, a pillow and a surprise. I can’t share any pictures of the fabric I have chosen because I want it to be a surprise….hopefully a good one.

Back in the fall of 2014 I was very lucky and won a fat quarter bundle from Sew Sister’s Blogathon Canada. It was Northcott’s Stonehenge OH CANADA line. Last year I made this quilt and donated it to Quilts of Valour Canada.
I used the leftover fabric to make another quilt to donate in 2016. This also gives me my second FAL finish for the first quarter (here is a link to my original FAL post)
I used a poppy motif in the centre of the squares and in the border. I also did quite a bit of ruler work in the light border and between the squares. The front is so busy that it is hard to see the quilting. I like the design that it makes on the back.
I altered my label to add the Quilts of Valour logo.

Since today is National Quilting Day I thought I would celebrate my first finish for this years finish-a-long (see my first quarter FAL wish list here). I actually finished all the free motion quilting in December but it took me a while to finally finish hand sewing on the binding. I can’t believe that I have made 6 different quilts from leftover fabric from a quilt I made when I first started quilting. Hopefully I’ve gotten a lot better at estimating fabric requirements since then. I had a lot of fun with the free motion quilting on this one.

I have managed to keep up with the 365 quilt challenge. I’ve got my first 21 blocks of the year done:
My Quilts of Valour WIP is on the longarm getting ditched while I decide how I want to quilt it.
And finally, I have all the blocks pieced on my baby quilt so I am in the process of sewing the blocks together. I haven’t decided if I am going to add any borders.

I’m jumping on board the 2016 Finish-a-Long again. I just love that it keeps me focused and motivated to complete my list each quarter. This year it is being hosted by several different bloggers from around the world.
My first quarter list has three goals. I want to finish Leftovers VI. It was on my list twice last year so hopefully this will be the last time.
I would like to finish my second Quilts of Valour charity quilt:
And finally, I have a baby quilt in progress. We are having a bit of a baby explosion in our family so I need to get this finished before the next one is born.

Our guild is collecting baby quilts for Our Lady of Grace. The quilts will go to pregnant or parenting teens. I had some left over fabric from Leah’s Quilt so I decided to make a baby girl quilt. I love the colours…they look so girly and feminine. I went a little overboard with the quilting, what else is new, but hopefully whoever gets it will like it. This quilt is also my second FAL finish for the 4th quarter and my November ALYoF goal.
When it was finished I decided that I needed to make one for a baby boy too. I raided my stash and came up with this version:
They look so cute together:

Now that I have given this quilt as a gift I can post pictures of it. It is my Oct ALYoF Goal and my first finish for the final quarter of the 2015 Finish-a-Long.
This summer Erin married her sweetheart Paul. Paul’s sister Sue just had a baby girl. She is the first grandchild in their family. In honour of the birth of Leah and the joining of our families I made her this baby quilt.
I used a stylized feather in the lighter triangles to push them into the background and have the brighter triangles pop forward.
I used trapunto to make the hearts pop and then did a dense quilting in the background to enhance their 3d effect even more.
I like the back of this quilt. I used some left over HST blocks and a few 5 inch squares. You can really see the free motion quilting on the back.

It is time to compile my list of works-in-progress that I hope to finish in the final quarter of the 2015 Finish-a-long hosted by Adrianne at On The Windy Side. I’ve got 3 projects:
I’ve got a HST quilt in progress. It is a surprise so I can’t show too much of it.
These are some of the blocks that I have made for my series of Leftover’s Quilts. This will be the 6th one.
I’ve got a few dozen left over 5″ squares and a handful of HSTs from the first WIP on my list that I plan to piece into a new quilt.
Leftovers 5 is finally finished. It was on my 3rd quarter FAL list and my September ALYoF goal. I can now cross a log cabin quilt off of my bucket list. I really enjoyed quilting this one. Played with lots of my rulers and went a little wild. It was a little windy when I was trying to take pictures so the quilt so it looks a little wonky. I have my second FAL for the 3rd quarter (this is my original list). It is my little black dress lap quilt. It was a gift for someone that I have worked with for a long time. Unfortunately I was so rushed to get it to her before she went on vacation that I forgot to take pictures of the finished quilt. Here is what it looked like before I had the final borders on:
The recipient was kind enough to share a few pictures.

It’s time to post my wish list for the 3rd quarter of the 2015 Finish-a-long hosted by Adrianne at On the Windy Side. I have 3 in progress projects that I would like to finish.
First is my little black dress quilt. It was on my 2nd quarter list and also on the May and June ALYoF list but still hasn’t been completed. I have most of the FMQ done and then I have to add a label and bind it. It is a gift for someone and it has to be finished by the end of August so hopefully I will make my goal this time.
Second is a lap quilt that is in the planning and piecing stages. I had a couple of charm square bundles of Scrumptious from Bonnie and Camille. I am making up the design as I go along so I don’t really know how the final quilt top will look.
And last but not least I have started Leftovers V. I am using strips and small rectangles left over from my Blue Odyssey Quilt. I’m also planning on incorporating leftover blocks from Blue Odyssey and Leftovers III somewhere in the quilt.

With only hours to spare I just put the last hand stitches into my binding to officially finish my April goal and my first FAL for the 2nd quarter. Yippee!!! It is a lap quilt that I made as a surprise for someone special.

It is time to post my wish list for the 2nd quarter of the 2015 finish-a-long hosted by Adrianne at On the Windy Side. I can’t believe this but I don’t have any UFO’s and just two works in progress. Shocking!!! Getting my longarm allowed me to completely wipe out my pile of quilt tops.
My first WIP is a lap quilt that I am making out of a layer cake called “Tapestry” (this WIP is also on my April ALYoF goal list). I don’t normally buy pre-cuts but I went to quilt show and they were so reasonably priced that I couldn’t resist.
My second WIP is also a lap quilt that I am using charm squares from a fabric line called “Little Black Dress 2” and a few additions from my stash.

Well it took two FALS (first quarter FAL list) and one ALYoF (March) but Leftovers IV is finally finished. I did a lot of ruler work on it and quite a bit of dense quilting. I was able to cross two items off my bucket list with this one…..a string quilt and a HST quilt.

I can’t believe it but I actually still made my February goal (original post here) and have my second FAL (original post here) for this quarter. Having a new puppy has really limited my quilting time but when the little, furry devil-child is sleeping I am able to steal a few moments of creative time. I did a lot of ruler work on this quilt to enhance the shapes in the design. If you want to read more about my Quilts of Valour charity quilt and see more pictures click here.

Yeah…..I made my January goal for #ALYOF. Back on January 5th I blogged about finishing my baby boy quilt made with Zen Chic Fabric. My cousin’s son has a baby due in April (does that make him/her my 3rd cousin or cousin twice removed??) and I have a feeling it will be a boy This is the first quilt I’ve made with the “L” shape block. I didn’t realize how versatile it was and how many different designs I could make with it. I just played with these 3 ideas on my design wall before settling on the last one.
I’m happy with the way it turned out. First goal for 2015 ALYoF completed…..yeah me!!! Hopefully this will be the start of a 12 month streak. This quilt is also my first FAL quilt for the first quarter. I originally blogged about it here.

Once again this year I am going to participate in the Finish-a-Long (FAL). I have found it to be a very productive tool to help keep me on track. This year the FAL is being hosted by Adrianne at On the Windy Side.
Because I have been so successful with the FAL the last two years, I am shocked to say that I only have a few works in progress so my first quarter list is going to be very small.
First, I would like to finish the FMQ on Leftovers IV and bind it.
I have a baby/crib quilt in progress made with Barcelona from Zen Chic. It is just a pile of blocks right now.
And my last FAL is for Quilts of Valour. I was very lucky and won a fat quarter bundle from Sew Sister’s Blogathon Canada. I am planning a HST quilt….not sure what the final design will look like but I am in the process of making lots of HSTs.
Filed under Charity Quilt, FAL, Finish-A-Long, Quilts of Valour
This is my final finish for 2014…and #4 out of 5 that I had hoped to finish in the last quarter (see list here). It is a quilt that I made to test a pattern called High Tea designed by Adrianne at On the Windy Side. The quilt is is going to be donated to Little Warriors Be Brave Ranch. Each child is given a quilt when they arrive at camp and when they leave they get to take it home with them.
I came so close to completing all 5 quilts. Leftovers IV just needs a tad more FMQ so I guess it will have to go on my 2015 first quarter list.
Filed under Charity Quilt, FAL, Finish-A-Long, Quilting
My third finish for the 4th quarter (original list is here)is a queen/king size one block wonder commission quilt for my massage therapist. She gave me a piece of fabric to use for my inspiration and then left everything else up to me.

I’m pretty happy with my completions this year and I have the finish-a-long to thank for keeping me on track. It motivates me each quarter to try and finish all the projects that I have on my list. I am definitely going to keep participating in 2015.
I finished the girl’s version of High Tea which gives me my second FAL for the 4th quarter (FAL wish list). I went a little overboard with the quilting but it was good therapy for me. It helped to keep my mind off of Tango’s passing. This was the pattern that I tested for Adrianne from On the Windy Side. I also have a boy’s version in our local football team’s colours. It is waiting for time on the longarm.
First I just did this design in pink and I was happy with it….or so I thought.
Then I came back in with orange thread and added the inner petals filled in with pebbles. Still not satisfied I added the inner orange loops.
Then I decided to fill the orange loops with thread to give it more dimension. I was happy with the final design and moved on to work on the next row. Then I got the bright idea to do some dense quilting in the background to allow the design to really pop forward. I lost track of how much time I put into the FMQ in the 15 white squares but it was substantial.
Leftovers IV is still on the longarm. Here is a sneak peak at the quilting I’ve done so far.
I’ve also been working on a commission quilt for my Massage Therapist. She gave me an inspiration pillowcase and then left the rest up to me so that she would be surprised.

I’ve finally finished Leftovers III which gives me my first FAL for the 4th quarter (FAL wish list). It has lots of feathers and detailed quilting in the white background. Unfortunately it was a dull day when I took these pictures so you can’t see the detail and loft created by the quilting.
It is my own design and it was made with leftover strips of fabric (#scraptastictuesday) from my Blue Odyssey quilt. Click here to see more pictures of Leftovers III and to read about the making of this quilt.
I have finished the FMQ on the girl’s version of High Tea and I’m pretty happy with it. Once I finish sewing on the binding I will post more pictures.
Leftovers IV is now on the frame. I haven’t figured out what I am going to FMQ on it but I am leaning towards either using just white thread in the background or going a little crazy and using multiple colours.

It is that time again to make a commitment to the final quarter of the 2014 finish-a-long hosted by Katy at the Littlest Thistle. I have one left over from last quarter that didn’t get finished and I am adding four more to my list for a total of five.
Leftovers III is on my frame and about 3/4 quilted so I just have to finish it off and bind it.
Leftovers IV is going to be a HST string quilt. I’ve got about 80% of the blocks made so I have to finish the last few, find the perfect layout, sew them together, quilt and then bind.
Yesterday I volunteered to be a pattern tester for Adrianne at On the Windy Side. I’ve got roughly 15 days to have a finished queen size quilt top. Although it is a tight timeline….I’m looking forward to the new experience. I am not allowed to share the pattern with you just yet because it is top secret until it is published and for sale at the end of the month. I’m primarily using Zen Chic’s Barcelona fabric along with some Grunge fabric from Basic Grey. When the quilt is completed I am going to donate it to http://littlewarriors.ca/events/quilts-for-the-be-brave-ranch/. Each child is given a quilt when they arrive at camp and when they leave they get to take it home with them.
At the 2nd quarter FAL wrap up party I was lucky enough to win a $25 gift card from Becca at Sew me a Song. I used it to help purchase this 1/2 yard fabric bundle. I think these fabrics, plus a few more from my stash, will make a cute quilt for a little girl. I am using the same pattern as above and it will be donated to the Be Brave Ranch too.
And my final project is a commission. A queen size quilt for my massage therapist. She gave me this pillow sham to use as my inspiration and left the rest up to me. No pressure there. I can’t say much more or show the fabrics that I’m using because she looks at my blog and I want this to be a complete surprise….hopefully a good one?!?!?!
Yikes….this is a big list.
I can’t believe that this quilt is finally done. I made it back in 2009 or 2010. It hung around my studio for years because I had no idea how I wanted to quilt it and I was afraid to tackle it on my domestic machine. It was on my 2nd and 3rd quarter FAL lists. I even had it on my frame 3 different times before I finally finished all the free motion quilting. I used two layers of batting: a stiff fusible one (so that it will hang flat and firm) and a high loft polyester. It gave amazing depth to the peacocks and the flowers. I put a sleeve on it so that it can be used as both a wall hanging or a lap quilt. I took pictures today in the shade and in full sun. Although the full sun pictures fade out the colours, they definitely show off the dimension created by the quilting and the double batting.
I just love how the quilting shows up on the back of the quilt….such dimension.
And of course there has to be a picture of little Tilly parked in the middle of my quilt as I hand sew the binding on. I love the bad-hair-day-mohawk-head. I looks like she was giving Don the evil eye because she was sick of the flash going off in her face repeatedly.
