FAL Quarter 3 Wish List

It is time to commit to my list of quilts that I hope to complete in the 3rd quarter of the 2014 Finish-a-long hosted by The Littest Thistle.  There are only 4 on my list so I should have no excuses for not finishing them.

I am embarassed to admit that I still have one that was on my 1st and 2nd quarter lists that still isn’t done. I think I started this one block wonder back in 2010 and it just sat for years because I didn’t know how to finish the top to get it to a useable size.   It became a finished quilt top in the 1st quarter and I did the FMQ in the 2nd…..it just needs to have the binding cut and sewn on.   Let’s hope that 3 times on the list is the charm.

OBW_1

Shoji screen was on my 2nd quarter list.  It had been a finished quilt top for years but I was reluctant to tackle the FMQ on my domestic machine.  It is about 50% quilted (I had to take it off the frame to finish Jana’s Wedding Quilt).

ShojiScreenframe

I started Leftovers III last month.   I WAY over bought fabric for my Blue Odyssey Quilt and this is the 3rd quilt that I am making with the excess fabric.

Leftovers3piecing

And my final quilt for the 3rd quarter is Urban Window .  I’ve been wanting to play with the quick curve ruler since it came out.  More than a year ago I bought the ruler, pattern and this fabric and it has sat staring at me ever since.

Final FAL and Quarter 2 Wrap Up

Back on April 8th I posted my list of the 6 quilts that I wanted to finish in the 2nd quarter of this year’s finish-a-long hosted by the Littlest Thistle (link here).  My list had 3 from the first quarter that never got finished on time and 3 new ones.  I managed to finish four of the six:

Jana’s Wedding House Quilt

JanaHouseQuilt

Triangle Quilt-a-long

TriQALfinished

Charm Square Crib #2

Baby2

And this one is my final FAL for the quarter.  It is Charm Square Crib Quilt #3.  I didn’t have enough charm squares left to finish the quilt so I raided my stash and added some green sashing and wider borders at the top and bottom.  It gave me more room to add some FMQ.  I did a free hand swirl and pebble design all over and then feathers in the top and bottom borders.  I took these pictures in the sun because they really showed off the texture that the quilting added.  Unfortunately it fades out the colours a bit.

WIP and FAL #3

Recognize these fabrics.  Yes I have started working on Leftovers III.  This time I am tackling the pile of 1-1/4 strips.   This is what I’ve got so far.  Each little piece is only a 3/4 of an inch finished square and it takes 64 to make a 6×6 block.

Leftovers3piecing

I’ve also got my 3rd finish for the 2nd quarter of this year’s FAL hosted by  The Littlest Thistle.  It is a crib size quilt made from charm squares that I did a free hand flower swirl design all over it (FAL wish list for the 2nd quarter).

Tango’s new transportation

photo

As Tango’s degenerative myelopathy progresses she is having a harder time trying to walk around.  She is constantly getting her back legs crossed or having them slip out from underneath her.  She can still bunny hop/run fairly well but changing direction and stopping are a real challenge.  We ordered a wheelchair for her and we have started getting her comfortable with it.  This is a video of her first time testing her new wheels.

Jana and Jerry’s Wedding Quilt

JanaHouseQuilt

I’ve been awol these last few weeks because I have been working madly trying to finish this quilt for our Niece’s wedding.  I haven’t been able to post any pictures along the way because I wanted the finished quilt to be a surprise.  By far this is the most complicated and intricate quilt that I have ever designed, pieced and/or free motion quilted.   From start to finish, I put well over 100 hours into the quilt.  It was 106 x 106 when I loaded it onto the frame but I’m sure it shrunk a few inches because of all the detailed quilting.  To see more pictures and to read about the making of this quilt please follow this link “Jana and Jerry’s House Quilt”.  This also gives me my second FAL for this quarter (my original list).

Triangle Quilt-a-Long Finished

TriQALfinished

With just 2 hours to spare before the midnight EST deadline I put the last hand stitch in the binding of my Triangle QAL.  All things considered I am pretty happy with the final product.  The one thing I love about working on a project that isn’t a gift or commission is that I have the freedom to just “wing it” with the design and quilting.  I wanted it to be a little longer to fit a twin bed so I added a thick section about a third of the way down.  The bonus is that it gave me a lot of whitespace to go wild with my free motion quilting.  I also wanted the quilt to have a lot of loft so I used two layers of batter.  Wool on the bottom and a polyester on top.  Another plus…..this is my first FAL for the second quarter at The Littlest Thistle (here is a link back to my original post).

TriQALclose7
TriQALclose8

I grouped several triangles together and quilted them as one large triangle and I did some detailed quilting on the solid coloured triangles.

TriQALclose1 TriQALclose2 TriQALclose4 TriQALclose5 TriQALclose6

I like the way the quilting shows up on the backing.

WIP and Triangle QAL

TrangleQAL1

I’ve got all my rows sewn together for the Triangle QAL at the Sassy Quilter.  I’m really looking forward to the FMQ so that I can use some of the techniques that I learned in my longarm class with Judi Madsen last week.  Although all the fabrics are pretty busy and they will hide the quilting, I’m still going to let my inner ‘Madsen’ out to run wild and free.  I haven’t trimmed the sides yet because I haven’t decided if I want to bother with bias binding to go up and down the points or take the easy way out and go with a straight seam.

Judi Madsen Class

When you see her quilts on her website or in her book they look amazing. But……in person they are absolutely unbelievable. The incredible detail and the way her quilting enhances the piecing is truly inspiring. And to top it all off she is incredible gracious and humble. All that talent in a wonderful lady. If you get the opportunity to take a class with her I highly recommend it.

WIP, QAL and Judi Madsen class

Lucky me…..tomorrow and Friday I have a longarm quilting class with the amazing Judi Madsen from Green Fairy Quilts.  I signed up for the class at the end of last year so it has been a very long wait.

I just managed to get my rows pieced for the Triangle QAL.  I’m up-to-date and ready to start sewing the rows together next week.  It is amazing how much the rows shrink up when you starting sewing all those 1/4 inch seams.

I haven’t made any progress on our Niece’s wedding gift quilt but that’s ok.  I’ve got almost 6 weeks to finish it and I am hoping for some quilting inspiration from my longarm class.

FAL Quarter 2 Wish List

It is time to commit to my list of projects for Littlest Thistle’s 2014 finish-a-long. I guess it has to at least include the 3 quilts that were on my Q1 list that didn’t get finished.  My one block wonder from 2010:

OBW_frame

And the two baby quilts:
CharmBaby3-1 Babyfmq1

I will add three more for good measure: king size “house” quilt for our Niece’s wedding in May, twin size triangle quilt-a-long and the Shoji screen wall hanging::

First Quarter FAL Wrap-up

Way back in the beginning of January I set my sights high and put 11 quilts on my list (I blogged about it here and here).  This year the FAL is being hosted by Katy at the Littlest Thistle.  Although I did finish piecing and/or quilting all of them, a few never got the bindings sewn on so technically they don’t qualify as a finish.  Officially I have 8 finishes.  I quilted all 5 of the charity quilts for the Little Warriors Be Brave Ranch (I blogged about them here, herehere and here).  In the end, I actually FMQ 6 of them.  I hope the kids enjoy them.

Kimono_finish

I was particularly pleased with finally finishing my Kimono wall hanging.  It was on my FAL list 3 times before it actually was completed and hung on the wall.

CharmBaby2-1
Finish #7 was a baby quilt.  I did my first test drive of a longarm machine with it.  I enjoyed playing with the machine so much that I ended up buying my own longarm.  This quilt was donated to a silent auction fundraiser for a friend’s daughter.  (I blogged about it here)

sidefull

And finally, this is finish#8.  It is a monster 104″ x 116″ king size quilt filled with gorgeous, blue asian fabrics.  I made my own pantograph for it.  It is clam shell shape with 3 grass like fronds coming from the bottom left corner.  I saw a similar design on line but it was a digitized pattern and I don’t have the computer module for my longarm so I couldn’t buy it.  I used the old fashioned, pencil, graph paper and the bottom of a jar to make my design.

Edmonton Waste Management Centre Tour

We spent the entire day at the EWMC.  Man that place is huge….550 acres huge and it is North America’s largest collection of modern, sustainable waste processing and research facilities.  Rick Mercer even came to Edmonton to do a package on our system.  It is quite well done.

EWMC is comprised of the Cloverbar Landfill (closed in 2009) and several amazing facilities:

Here is the view from on top of the old landfill site.  It is about 10 stories high and gives you the opportunity to view the city skyline, the river and the whole EWMC facility.

clover1 emwc

At EWMC they recycle the equivalent of 800,000 trees a year.  Currently 60% of household waste is diverted from the landfill via recycling and composting.  When the waste to biofuels facility is fully operational that number will increase to 90%.   It will convert 100,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste into 38 million litres of biofuels annually.

I was most shocked to learn that they take all the yard and garden waste, household organics that they reclaim from our garbage bags and combine that with the biosolids (i.e. poop, toilet paper, etc) that they remove at the water treatment plant and they produce compost.  It is bagged and sold to consumers as well as used for municipal gardens.

It was truly overwhelming to see how every bag of household garbage is processed, filtered and sorted to reclaim as much as they can and dramatically reduce how much is divert to landfill.  I highly recommend going for a tour.  It will really put into perspective how much trash we produce and how it is everyone’s responsibility to look at what they can do to reduce our impact on the environment.

WIP and Triangle QAL

I’m enjoying the break from the house quilt and working on my triangle quilt-a-long.  I love the fabrics (Summer Breeze I and II, some Kona solids and a misc print)….they just make me feel sunny and spring like which is a vast improvement over the cold, miserable weather we have been experiencing.  I love the look of the starched fabric all lined up waiting to be cut up.

Master Composter Recycler

A few months ago I was surfing for some info on composting and I came across a link to the City of Edmonton Master Composter Recycler program.  I read through the info and immediately knew that this was something that I wanted to join. I put in my application, I was given an interview and I ended up one of the lucky 30 people that were selected to participate in 2014.  We had our first two classes this past week.  The participants range in age from maybe the early 20’s to the 60’s and everyone seems passionate about the environment and what they can do to minimize their impact.  Yesterday’s class was a real eye opener for me.  We talked about what items can be put in the blue bag.  I was pretty disappointed to discover that probably close to 5o% of the stuff I put in my blue bag was wrong.  Did you know that the only plastic shopping bags that are acceptable for recycling in Edmonton are the ones you get from the grocery store….that’s it.  They don’t take the plastic bags that we put our fresh produce in, they don’t take shopping bags from retail stores, plastic packaging etc.  On the positive side there was nothing that I put in the trash that should have been put in our blue bag.  If you are ever unsure about what can be recycled, here is a link to a handy on-line poster that you can print.  A good rule of thumb is that is has to be bigger than your fist and smaller than a basket ball (except flattened cardboard, it can be bigger).

I’m really looking forward to Tuesday’s class on composting.  We even get to try our hands at setting up a worm composting bin.  I’ve been bugging Don for years to have one in the house.  Now’s my chance!!

WIP and a new Quilt-a-long

What started out as a gift of a lap quilt for our Niece’s wedding gift has now morfed.  First it grew to  a queen size.  I went out and bought more fabric and I also purchased my backing fabrics.  Well surprise…surprise….it is now a King Size Quilt.  Yikes…..not only do I have to do some extensive fabric shopping for the quilt top but the two fabrics that I bought to use for the backing are now too short and there is no more on the bolt at the fabric store.  Not sure what I am going to do but I guess it is going to be a pieced backing for sure.  I don’t want to show any pictures of the completed blocks,  I want the finished product to be a surprise, but here is a glimpse of the fabric explosion in my studio.  I’ve got so many different fabrics that I am using to make the house blocks.

JanaFabCuttings

Even though I am on a tight deadline to get our Niece’s ever growing wedding quilt completed…..I’ve decided to join the Triangle Quilt-a-long.  Am I crazy or what????  I was going through my bloglovin’ feed and came across a post about this new QAL.  I like having more than one project on the go at a time cuz sometimes you just need a break….just to walk away from the current project you are working on to get a new perspective.  I thought I would use my leftover collection of Summer Breeeze I and II fabrics (left over from making this quilt for my friend Sue) and add a few solids for contrast.  If I like the final product it may be another charity quilt for the Little Warrirors Be Brave Ranch.  Here is my stash…..I just need to officially sign up and iron and starch all my fabrics…..cutting starts this Friday.

TriQALFabrics

There is one week left until the end of the first quarter finish-a-long hosted by Katy at the Littlest Thistle.  All of my tops have been finished and they have been sandwiched and quilted. I’ve got to do some mad hand sewing to get all the bindings on in time.

FAL Finish #7

I finished binding this baby quilt and I donated it to my personal trainer’s daughter to use for a silent auction fund raiser for her soccer team.  Unfortunately I forgot to take  pictures of it before I gift wrapped it so this old picture will have to do.

FAL finishes 4 and 5

Well there are only 2 weeks left in the first quarter finish-a-long.  I had 11 items on my list so I guess I am almost half way through.  These two quilts are both for the Little Warriors Be Brave Ranch.  I tried my hand a creating my own pantograph and it turned out ok.  Both quilts are Micky/Mini Mouse themed so I wanted to do an edge to edge design that would be in keeping with that.  Hopefully the kids that get these will enjoy them.
