Spirit the Cheerleader

We all got up bright and early to head to St. Albert so that I could participate in the Run Wild Half Marathon. Spirit was a great cheerleader at the start line and attracted tons of attention. There is something about a Berner puppy.  Everyone just wants to meet her and smooch her up.

After the race we had to go to Spirit’s conformation class. Her brother, handsome Samson, was in the same class so we finally got a picture of the two of them together. Although Spirit is about the same height as Samson she looks dwarfed beside him. He also weighs about 13lbs more than her (that’s about 20% heavier).

Spirit Goes Home Again

SpiritCoreen

This afternoon I took Spirit back to the breeder (Tailspin Bernese Mountain Dogs) so that Coreen (Grandma) could see her. I could see that Spirit definitely remembered her and was curious to be back at her birth home.

She was very excited to see her Mom Sophie again….unfortunately the feeling wasn’t mutual.  All was not lost because Jake, a beautiful 6 year old Berner, was quite nice and gentle with her.  She looks dwarfed by his huge head and 110 pound body.

Can you caption these photos?

When I saw these pictures I couldn’t stop laughing.  It looks like Spirit was trying to give Hope a clear message.  In the first picture she is sound asleep with her nose parked in Hope’s behind and in the second one her eyes are wide open and see appears to be pushing her paw against the area that is offending her.

Surprise…she’s here!!!

SpiritPickup

Last night the breeder called and asked us if we would like to pick up our puppy one day earlier. We have a snow storm coming on Thursday and she was worried about us making the hour long drive out to her farm in a blizzard. Very thoughtful and of course I would love to get Spirit as soon as possible. Well here she is. It was a very stressful ride home in the car. It looks like I am going to have my first puppy who is terrified of being in the car. We’ll work very slowly and hopefully get her more comfortable. We took just a few pictures when we got home and now she is crashed. Hopefully we will have a quiet night. Welcome to your new family Spirit.

Pets on Quilts Blog Hop

Today I am joining the 2014 Pets on Quilts blog hop. Tilly loves to “help” by sitting in the middle of any and every quilt that I try to hand sew the binding on. She is so darn cute and flirty when she does it that I don’t have the heart to kick her off. Here are just a few of the many quilts her hairy, little body has graced.

She even likes to “help” with the piecing:

Wally and Tango thought they should  be included in the blog hop too:

WIP

I ‘ve finished the quilting on my Kimono wall hanging so I just need to put on the binding and I will have FAL finish #2.  I’ve got my Shoji Screen wall hanging on the frame now.  Lots of ditch work to do before I can start having some free motion fun.  Still not sure how I am going to quilt this one….I would like to enhance the large peacock print and maybe something unique in each of the different coloured blocks.

ShojiScreenframe

I have officially gone from being a quilt top maker to a real quilt maker thanks to my longarm.  Last October I had a huge pile of tops that had been hanging around for a few years.  After my Shoji quilt I only have two more WIP left.  A one block wonder that needs to have some borders added and an appliqué sewn on and a waterlily art quilt that is ready to be quilted.  Once they are done, I am officially up-to-date and have no WIP left (except for tons of binding to hand sew).  Wow…..I can’t believe it.

First WIP post for 2014

It is already the 3rd week in January and this is my first WIP post.  That either means that I haven’t done any work or I’ve been to0 busy working to take the time to post.  Unfortunately I haven’t been doing much quilt work.  Life has gotten in the way of the things I want to do.  Oh well it can only get better from here.

I have made some progress on my Asian Shadow Box quilt.  I finished the borders and it has been on the longarm for the last couple of weeks.  I made my own pantograph for this quilt.  I had some 11×17 graph paper that I used to create my design and then I just made a bunch of copies and taped them together.

Chewed Slipper’s Surprise

We found this DVD in our mailbox this week.  It was a surprise from Lorena and Amanda, the co-owners of Chewed Slippers Dog Photography.  This summer we did a photo shoot with them. Wally is almost 13 and I wanted to capture some special pictures with him.  They allowed 2 dogs in the sitting so we brought Tango along so that Don could get some pix of him and her together in the Canadian Search Dog uniform.  I wish we had known how special the pictures were going to be because we would have paid extra to add Tilly to the session (sorry Tilly….next time we will include you).  We didn’t know at the time, but a few weeks after the shoot we found out that Tango has Degenerative Myelopathy and the future prognosis for her is not very bright.  It just makes the pictures of her even more special.  They took well over 100 pictures.  When we went in for our viewing, we were overwhelmed.  Several of the pictures brought tears to my eyes.  I am so glad we did the session.  If you are looking to capture some memories of your family (two and four legged) I highly recommend Chewed Slippers.

2011 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 4,200 times in 2011. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 4 trips to carry that many people.

Remembering Cash

It is with a very heavy heart that I announce that Tango’s brother Cash went to puppy heaven.  They discovered that his body was full of cancer so they made the very difficult decision to say goodbye.  Our hearts go out to you.

Attention litter-bugs: puppycam ready to switch on

I have loved this breed for years.  I can hardly wait to see the new puppies and watch them grow.  I am hoping to add a Berner to our family in the future.

Guilty Dog

I saw this YouTube video and I couldn’t stop laughing.  Anyone who has/had a dog can relate to this.  The lab’s facial expressions are just priceless.  Although Wally never looks guilty (that’s Tango’s specialty) he does have the classic Golden Retriever “love me/I’m so proud of myself”  slanty-eye-smiley-face.  Everyone lucky enough to be owned by a Golden knows that one.  Too cute!!!

Snow…snow….go away snow!

Spring can’t come soon enough for us this year. According to the weather gods, our region hasn’t seen such a long, grey, snowy and bleak winter since the 1970’s. This picture was taken on the weekend. It shows Don standing in front of the snow mound on the side of our driveway. It is hard to get the perspective right……Don is over 6 feet tall and the snow is several feet taller than he is and this isn’t even the highest that it was. It is going to be well into June before all this white stuff melts away naturally. We might have to fire up the old snow blower to start breaking down the mound and throwing it into the middle of the cul-de-sac to help it melt quicker.

On Saturday we drove almost 3 hours south of here. As we got further away from home, there was less and less snow. When we got to our destination, the ditches and fields along the highway were bare grass. Quite a noticable contrast to what we have here.

It has been a really tough winter for Team Tango to train. It has been either brutally cold or they have been very limited on where there could go because of the depth of the snow. Even with 30″ snow shoes on, Don was still stinking a foot or more into the snow and poor Tango would do “face plants” when she was in a full run and the snow suddenly gave way below her.

A Boeing 747-400 passenger jet can hold 416 passengers. This blog was viewed about 5,000 times in 2010. That’s about 12 full 747s.

In 2010, there were 112 new posts, not bad for the first year! There were 185 pictures uploaded, taking up a total of 59mb. That’s about 4 pictures per week.

The busiest day of the year was November 1st with 123 views. The most popular post that day was Our Dogs.

Where did they come from?

The top referring sites in 2010 were WordPress Dashboard, facebook.com, en.wordpress.com, mail.live.com, and mail.yahoo.com.

Some visitors came searching, mostly for lifeinthedoghouse.ca, lifeinthedoghouse, http://www.lifeinthedoghouse, puppy sleep, and http://www.lifeinthedoghouse.ca.

Welcome 2011

2010 was a great year for ‘Life in Dog House’.  All 3 two-legged kids came for a visit and we added anothor four-legged member to our household. Team Tango participated in 2 missing person and 3 cadaver searches and were re-certified for another year.

I’ve updated the banner with more current pictures of the dogs.  My boy Wally is really starting to develop the classic old golden white muzzle.   I guess that is to be expected since he is almost 10 years old.  He is still really young at heart and physically (other than the white hairs on his face) he looks and acts like a dog half his age.

We don’t know what 2011 will bring but if it is even half as good as 2010 we will be truly blessed.

Holy Smoke!

For the last two days we have been blanketed with thick smoke from forest fires in BC.  Visibility is quite poor and there are air quality warnings.  They even cancelled Tango’s training session last night so neither dogs or humans would be exposed.  I have asthma and I am noticing that my breathing is affected. Yesterday there was only a few blocks visibility…..today is a little better.  Don took this picture from his office downtown.  It looks like it is night time but the picture was actually taken in the middle of the afternoon.  The wind direction is supposed to begin shifting tomorrow so hopefully that will improve our air quality.
