FAL #2

I have my second FAL for the 3rd quarter (this is my original list).  It is my little black dress lap quilt.  It was a gift for someone that I have worked with for a long time.   Unfortunately I was so rushed to get it to her before she went on vacation that I forgot to take pictures of the finished quilt.  Here is what it looked like before I had the final borders on:

Hug Your Hound Day

Bockman1

Bockman2

Did you know that Sept 13th is National Hug your Hound Day.  To celebrate, Wally and I participated in the Bockman Foundation Wheel, Walk or Run for spinal cord injuries.  My old boy was able to do the whole race with me.  I would have liked to have included Spirit but she is too young to do that kind of pounding and she has had a bout of panosteitis (growing pains) so we just do gentle walks together.  Just as we were about to cross the finish line the generator stopped and the inflatable start/finish line balloon came down on top of us.

New Puppy Bed

We started making this raised dog bed over two years ago.  The various pieces have spent 2 winters on our deck waiting for some attention.  Well I’m thrilled to say we have finally assembled it and it has Spirit’s seal of approval.  I think she will find it nice and cool to have the air circulating underneath her.  It creaks and groans with all her weight on it but it should support her just fine. (Thanks Auntie Patty for finally lighting a fire under our butts to get us to assemble it)

My Sous Chef

I decided to make some homemade vanilla bean ice cream for our girls weekend.  When I was done I let the “kids” do the pre-wash on the plastic churning blade.  Spirit’s big, fat head dominated and she managed to get three licks in for every one my old boy Wally got.  If you look closely you can see 3 muzzles as all the dogs try to get their share of the ice cream.

September Goal for ALYoF

My Button
It is time to set my goal for this month.  I am going to try and finish my Leftovers V quilt.  Yes….I am embarrassed to admit that I have been able to make 5 twin size quilts out of the leftover fabric from my Blue Odyssey quilt.  There is even a Leftovers VI in the piecing stage.

Leftovers V is on the longarm right now but it has so much detailed/dense quilting that it is going to take a while to finish.

9MonthsTo help Spirit celebrate her big day we gave her her first knuckle bone. To say that it was a hit would be a big understatement. She LOVED it!! It kept her busy for a couple of hours. Every time I walked by her she had this look on her face that clearly said “please don’t take this away from me…pretty please!” I did take it from her several times to make sure she wouldn’t resource guard it. She now weighs 34.6 kg or 76.2 lbs.

I’ve been off work for almost a week so I’ve managed to fit in quite a bit of quilting time. First off, I’ve piece the August BOM:
2015BOMAUG

I’ve also managed to make a few dozen log cabin blocks for “Leftovers V”.  This block has been on my bucket list for a while now.  Log cabins can be used to make so many interesting designs.  I like the way the blocks are coming together and I hope to the have the quilt top finished by the end of the month. Still mulling around ideas on how I want to quilt it.

Tribute to Bella

Life has a way of really testing us.  The day I published the post about Wally and Bella’s reunion I got a message from her family saying that she wasn’t doing well.  She had stopped eating and had trouble breathing.  They took her to numerous vets and the prognosis was not good….she had cancer.  I had wanted to get Wally and Bella together because my boy was so old and I wasn’t sure how much longer he would be with us.  I never dreamed that we would be losing Bella first.  Three days later I got the news that my beautiful girl was gone.  We are devastated……I can’t imagine how her family is feeling.

I think Wally has now outlived all of the puppies from his first litter.  I’m so blessed to still have him.  I put together a slideshow of pictures.  I hope that it will help her mourning family.  It starts with a picture of Misty, Bella’s Mom.  It shows the puppies when they were just minutes old and goes up until the day Bella left us when she was 6 months old.  Bella was the darkest puppy in the litter and she wore a baby blue grosgrain ribbon collar.      Goodbye my beautiful Bella….Tango, Ming and Tasha will keep you company over the rainbow bridge.

Wally & Bella: Family Reunion

Way back in October 2003, when he was only 2-1/2, Wally’s first litter of puppies were born.  There were 12 beautiful, pure bred Golden Retrievers.  I was drawn to one of them immediately because she was a lovely dark red/golden colour like her Dad.  I named her Bella and I was lucky to foster her until she was 6 months old.

The last time I saw Bella was when she was 2 years old but Wally has not seen her since she left us in April of 2004.  That was until now.  Wally is 14 years old and Bella is 11-1/2.  They took one sniff of each other and it was like they were long time buddies.  Bella is a little slow moving and has some trouble with stairs but the two of them ran around and played like puppies.  It was so wonderful to watch.

Lisa Calle Classes

Calle-3

I was very fortunate and had the opportunity to take 3 classes at Sparrow Studioz this weekend with the lovely and talented Lisa Calle.  These are pictures of a couple of her samples that she brought to share with us.

Calle-1 Calle-2

I enjoyed all of the class but I felt especially inspired by her Divide and Design Class. I was one of the few that managed to finish their project.  I’m pretty happy with how it turned out….a few boo boo’s but that is what happens when you are learning new things.  I’m a ruler junkie so I added several of Lisa’s amazing rulers to my collection.  Here is my finished class project from Divide and Design:

3rd Quarter FAL List

It’s time to post my wish list for the 3rd quarter of the 2015 Finish-a-long hosted by Adrianne at On the Windy Side.  I have 3 in progress projects that I would like to finish.

IMG_2658

First is my little black dress quilt.  It was on my 2nd quarter list and also on the May and June ALYoF list but still hasn’t been completed.  I have most of the FMQ done and then I have to add a label and bind it.  It is a gift for someone and it has to be finished by the end of August so hopefully I will make my goal this time.

IMG_2657

Second is a lap quilt that is  in the planning and piecing stages.  I had a couple of charm square bundles of Scrumptious from Bonnie and Camille.  I am making up the design  as I go along so I don’t really know how the final quilt top will look.

IMG_2659

And last but not least I have started Leftovers V.  I am using strips and small rectangles left over from my Blue Odyssey Quilt.  I’m also planning on incorporating leftover blocks from Blue Odyssey and Leftovers III somewhere in the quilt.

Wordless Wednesday: Family Pictures

MeKids

A few weeks ago I read a very moving post about a dog that passed away unexpectedly. Her owner wanted a do over. Although she had literally hundreds of pictures of her beloved companion, she had none of her with her dog. The story struck a cord with me. I hate having my picture taken and I am always hiding from the camera. I have only a handful of pictures of me and Wally together. My boy is 14 now and he has already lived longer than the normal life expectancy of 12 years. I’m grateful that I saw that blog post. I don’t want to have the same regret when my very special boy goes over the rainbow bridge.

Little Rock Star

IMG_0198 IMG_0199

This is not exactly a “Wordless” Wednesday post.  This weekend Spirit participated in her first dog show. It was the Northern Alberta Canine Association All Breed show. Everything started Thursday night when Coreen (the breeder) gave Spirit her second bath and groom in less than 2 weeks. She was a lot more relaxed and less stressed for this bath than her first one. Even the high powered blow dryer didn’t phase her.

NACA2015Day1

On Friday morning, Jo-ann (the handler) showed her and Spirit worked with her beautifully. So well in fact that she got a best bitch in the 6-9 month old puppy category. She then went on to compete with all the winning female Berners and she got reserve (second best) which gave her two ribbons for the day. Coreen and Joanne were so happy with how well she showed that they nicknamed her “Little Rock Star”. Spirit’s Mom Sophie was amazing in the show ring and her nickname is “Rock Star”

On Saturday morning Spirit won best bitch in the 6-9 month old puppy category again. Then she went on to compete in the winners bitch category only this time she won it beating the dog that beat her on Friday. The win gave Spirit her first two points towards her championship.
NACA2015Day2

I was in total shock. Spirit was absolutely horrible for Jo-ann…the complete opposite of Friday. She constantly sat in the ring and she was just not listening to her. I barely had a chance to digest the win when all of a sudden Jo-ann is handing me the leash and telling me that I have to show Spirit in the best of winners category because she will be competing against her older brother Axl (previous litter) and she had to show him instead.

NACA2015Day2-2

It was almost a blessing because I had all of about 30 seconds to panic and then I had to grab the leash and run into the ring. I felt like a fish out of water. I kept apologizing to the judge for not understanding what she wanted me to do. The good news is that Axl won the best of winners category and it gave him all the points he needed to finish his championship.

Next came the best puppy in breed category where the girls compete against the boys for the first time. I handled her again. Her brother handsome Samson had won his 6-9 month old puppy category too so that meant Spirit had to compete against her brother. Although she won, it was a bitter sweet victory. It just didn’t feel right competing against her beautiful brother.

Sampson and Spirit NACA 2015

Sampson and Spirit NACA 2015

Spirit’s first in the Winners’ Bitch category meant that she moved on to compete in the best puppy in the working group. Since she was so horrible for Jo-ann and worked beautifully for me both times, we all decided that I would show her in the afternoon. She competed against 8 or 9 different working dog breeds and she came in fourth which gave her a beautiful big white ribbon.

NACA2015Group4

Here is her official winners picture.

Spirit's First Show_small

Sunday morning was an exact repeat of Friday except that I showed her in both rounds. She got a best bitch in the 6-9 month old puppy category and reserve (second best) in the winners bitch category which gave her another two ribbons.  In total she won six small and  1 large ribbon.

Bait & Gait Class and Mock Dog Show

MockShow

Samson, Axel, Ryder and Spirit

This morning Spirit and I took a Bait and Gait class as a warm up for the mock show this afternoon.  She did pretty well for a dog that loves to sit….a big no no for the show ring.  Then this afternoon the handler took her and worked her in the mock show.  Her brother Samson, her big brother Axel (same parents first litter) and the breeders’ Newfie Ryder were all in the same show.  Axl made it to best in show but lost to a beautiful Golden.

Spirit was so wiggly every time the judge touched her and when she tried to look at her bite.  She made the cut for the female working dog group but ended up losing to a cute boxer.  I think it was a great experience for her that hopefully will have her better prepared for the real show. The handler Jo-ann said she did a good job so hopefully she will do her breeders/grandparents (Steve and Coreen Johnson of Tailspin Bernese Mountain Dogs) proud next week at the Northern Alberta Canine Association all breed show.  This video is for you Coreen since you didn’t get the opportunity to see your grand-daughter “strut her stuff” in person.

6 Months Old

Spirit6Months-2Our girl is 6 months old and full of herself. One minute I love her to bits and can’t smooch her up enough and the next minute I would like to give her away to the first person I see. I guess it is the joy of adolescence. She can be so sweet and then so rotten a millisecond later.  We went to the Vet for our monthly weigh in and she was 28KG or almost 62 lbs.  She now weighs the same as Wally and she is almost as tall as he is.

Next weekend she will participate in her first Dog Show (All Breed).  We are doing a mock show on Sunday to give her a chance to work with her handler for the first time.

Bloggers Quilt Festival Entry #2

AmysCreativeSide.com

Here is my second entry into Amy’s Creative Side’s spring Blogger’s Quilt Festival.  I chose Leftovers IV for the original design category. I had tons of left over strips and tiny rectangles after making my Blue Odyssey quilt. So far I have made 4 twin quilts from the leftovers and there are probably enough scraps to make 1 or 2 more.  To read more about this quilt and see more pictures please click here.
